One of our communities published a helpful article, providing an overview of memory care communities and how they can offer support for seniors living with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Wanting to give our own take on the topic, we’ve expanded on some of the ideas presented while elaborating on the many benefits of memory support communities.
Assisted Living Memory Care facilities, or dementia/memory support communities, offer the services of assisted living such as meals, laundry and housekeeping, as well as assistance with daily living from dressing to medication management. However, memory support communities have the added benefit of being designed specifically for those who are experiencing the effects of dementia, such as wandering and forgetting important routines like bathing.
Memory care communities offer:
Memory support communities are designed as individual apartments that still allow for privacy while providing social gathering spaces such as family style dining, living rooms and activity rooms. Activities with other residents are offered daily and staff will remind residents when an activity is available. Social interaction can keep the mind agile and improve the overall well-being of residents.
In memory care communities:
Memory support staff are trained to address the symptoms of dementia, including de-escalation techniques when a resident is agitated. All of this adds to the safety of each and every resident in our care. Memory care staff and communities may be certified or trained by a certified dementia care leader. They also have access to quiet areas where residents can relax and avoid overstimulation.
